Memory hole
The memory hole, as in the phrase "Going down the memory hole," refers to a mechanism for censorship in George Orwell's novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. It's often a problem for /i/nsurgents, especially with JewTube videos getting pulled and people deleting pages. (There are Firefox add-ons to help)
Term
From the Wikipedia Page:
In the novel, the memory hole is a slot into which government officials deposit politically inconvenient documents and records to be destroyed. 1984's protagonist Winston Smith, who works in the Ministry of Truth, is routinely assigned the task of revising old newspaper articles in order to serve the propaganda interests of the government. For example, if the government had pledged that the chocolate ration would not fall below the current 30 grams per week, but in fact the ration is reduced to 20 grams per week, the historical record (e.g. an article from a back issue of the Times newspaper) is revised to contain an announcement that a reduction to 20 grams might soon prove necessary, or that the ration would soon be increased to that number. The original copies of the historical record are deposited into the memory hole. A document placed in the memory hole is supposedly transported to an incinerator from which "not even the ash remains".
The term now generally refers to the alteration or outright disappearance of inconvenient or embarrassing documents, photographs, transcripts, or other records, such as from a web site or other archive.
Gosh... who do we know that would want something like THAT to happen?
Practice and how to fix it
This is everything from Keef removing his statements to CoS deleting videos. The general rule of thumb the good /i/nsurgent practices is SAVE FUCKING EVERYTHING. If you see a YouTube video, just save it somewhere. Dox? Make a text file. Webpage? Ctrl+S it. Even if it’s just a giant folder called "SAVED" it will be of use to you if something were to disappear from the web.
Archives and other tools
Web archives
These sites archive webpages, allowing you to pull up old pages that have been deleted or altered.
- Wayback Machine - The most popular web archive. NOTE: It usually takes 6 to 24 months for a page to appear in the archive after it has been collected. This makes it useless for newer pages/posts.
- Archive.today - Works better for more recent websites. It can handle Web 2.0 stuff, making it ideal for sites like Twitter. It doesn't automatically archive pages, though; you have to do it yourself.
4chan archives
You never know when you'll need to pull up an old 4chan post. Some archivers save every image from every post, while others only save the thumbnails.
