Talk:L/i/nux
We should pick Ubuntu for this. Many of the users here are used to Windows and they won't expect the massive mindfuck that Gentoo can present. Ubuntu looks by far the best one.
- I agree with that dude, Ubuntu would probably be the easiest to use for the average anon. However I support the idea of creating our own distro, but we all know that'll never happen with how disorganized we are and since there doesn't seem to be anyone skilled enough to do it.
For bandwidth issues if we actually finished this we could probably host the distro on rapidshit or something, or if someone's willing to contribute a little jewgold we could buy a dedicated server specifically for this project and maybe W/i/ndows and possibly pay for a little of the hosting by shipping liveCDs to people too lazy to download like some other distro sites do.
Why not go with Backtrack? It's mission seems more or less the same, just without the trolling.
- I agree, just add some extra programs and make some basic changes to Backtrack, which is already a powerhouse distro made specifically to penetrate security. It is also friendly for windows users. The company even offers a course about how to use the Backtrack for "Offensive Security" purposes i.e. penetrate networks and shit, but it requires jewgold. Luckily a very detailed lab manual can be torrented.
- New backtrack is ubuntu 8.(something) and would be relatively easy to create a custom distro of, if we used the "Custom Livecd" thing that is in the ubuntu repositories.
Status report[edit]
I guess this is very very dead right now, what I'm interested in is mainly the arch build. I might try to start doing it from scratch some time in the summer if the project is dead. Only problem with an arch remix would be that we would have to disregard the Arch philosophy to make it easy for the newfag anons. --Drifter 01:30, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
i wat like amix of http://www.gnacktrack.co.uk/ and http://ubuntustudio.org/ and lots of anon shit Failfaag
I'd prefer if we could keep away from both ubuntu and gnome, arch+openbox would probably be the best choice. But if you start working on mixing those two remixes and then adding all the anon stuff I'll join you. --Drifter 16:15, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
New distro[edit]
I say we go with creating an entirely new distro for ourselves. Even though it will take a lot more work, the end result will be a lot better than simply remixing an old distro.
- [1], we already tried and failed. Why not remix an existing distribution at first, and then, once enough anons are actively contributing going distro? --The Fire of Delight 11:32, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
openSUSE[edit]
This is better than Ubuntu IMO (not just technically, even the usability is now way better - especially for KDE, which looks more like Windows than GNOME does). Just look at susestudio.com, they have a really nice web interface for quick creation of live DVDs/CDs an disk images (even for VMWare). I've got access to an account there, it really rocks the shit. When it's development has gone far enough, they will even provide free hosting of the images, what makes this a perfect solution.
- SUSE is one of the worst distributions around. It is pretty bad to work with and the RPM system sucks so bad. Debian or Ubuntu would be easier to work with.
- ^^ Also, fuck looking like windows. The first thing we need to worry about is usability, the last is making shit look pretty. --The Fire of Delight 11:32, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- Firstly KDE looks like fucking M-A-C secondly ^^ this^^.
Anonix/Anon core utils[edit]
Anonix. What the fuck is it. Anon core utils. What the fuck is it. YHBT kernel. What the fuck is that too. I have googled and found some dead threads on http://rechan.eu.org/ From what I can gather they tried a similar project, if anyone stumbles across any left over shit from this project it could be of use.
IRC Clients[edit]
Where it mentions that L/i/nux will include "a fuckton of IRC clients", I think it would be better to just take one good one and modify it to include the useful parts from the others. Instead of having one client for chatting, one for spamming, etc., just take the one and include the scripts for the other stuff, or even mode it (like on my old client, I added a bar on the bottom with buttons for "normal mode", "hax mode", "spam mode", and so on, and the buttons would re-organize my windows and options and such to how I liked them for each use). -Red Dragon 004
- Agreed. IRSSI is worth a look as a baseline to start from, especially as it already has some trolling scripts written for it. --The Fire of Delight 11:32, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- irssi for TTY, Konversation for GUI.
- Xchat + scripts, irssi + scripts
Re-branded Firefox?[edit]
There will be normal Firefox included or we are going to re-brand it? --asdzxcman 23:27, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
I will probably take firefox suace and edit it for rebranding for us. Any ideas? (inb4 firekip)
- Why bother, we are all big kids here, why not just use normal firefox, and if you want addons install them yourself? (It would cut down on the filesize as well)
This is L/i/nux, not W/i/ndows[edit]
We do not need to make this look like windows because this is not windows. I am already starting to work on my own L/i/nux becayse it seems that you all can get nothing done. You are not looking at the system performance than many of us might need, KDE is quite bloated and can use up a lot of ram and gnome doesn't use nearly as much. So I plan not to make mine into a windows clone, but just a linux distro spin off that has security software installed with some custom icons and pictures. This isn't including the config that I will edit to make it run faster.
GNOME and KDE and all the rest of the desktop environments are too bloated, we should use Openbox.
- GNOME isn't bad. KDE is mac. If you are looking for speed I would use XFCE.
Removable-Media Bootable[edit]
If the distro could be made bootable from a dvd or usb stick, I think it would find a slightly larger swath of use.
L/i/nux M/i/nt[edit]
If you have any comments or suggestions about L/i/nux M/i/nt, please add them here.
Is the beta set to be done the 19th, and then the final copy be open for the public later or did the project die?
Send me a link to a working copy for testing at mailbin23@gmail.com once you have one developed. --Ebola 17:36, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
If you have a ppa set up post it so I can put it on my Mint XFCE. Also, consider doing your l/i/nux m/i/nt based on a lighter CE of M/i/nt like XFCE, LXDE or Fluxbox. kthxbai!
what will sys reqs be?[edit]
if there has been no decision about this, to make more anons be capable to use this i have some ideas:
128 mb or higher of ram pentium 3 min of 1gb of disk space and anything else you can come up with
I'd say make it compatible with intel-processor macOSX. The amount of people using these computers on college campus' is nuts, it would open up a whole new population of people to use this distro.
Apple fanbitches, I say. Still, worth a shot since anything's better than some OS you can't do shit with.
Aireplay/Airodump[edit]
We need to do more than just install aircrack, we need to make sure(most) network cards work with monitoring/injecting, which often requires kernel and driver patches.
HEY FAGGOTS[edit]
Just base it off Backtrack Linux! Backtrack already has lots of tools on it, like penetration testing, brute forcing tools, etc.
