In April 2010, the academy changed its policy statement on female circumcision, with one the main new policy indicating controversial. Even though condemning female circumcision over all, this statement recommended that recent federal legislation prohibiting female circumcision had the unintended outcome of driving individuals to do the techniques in other countries, where these ladies challenged increased risk. Just as one compromise, this policy statement proposed that doctors have the choice to do a ceremonial 'nick' on women being a last resource to stop them from being sent overseas for full circumcision.
